HummerDid you know that the habitats of wild neighbors such as deer, box turtles, songbirds, and hawks are being destroyed at a phenomenal rate by the construction of new houses, roads and shopping centers? As if this didn't cause enough harm, these helpless creatures are also orphaned, injured, and sometimes even killed by our domestic pets, our automobiles, and even uninformed citizens. We as individuals cannot stop this progression, but with your help, Wildlife Response, Inc (WRI) can help heal the wounds that progress may inflict.

WRI, Hampton Roads oldest Wildlife Rehabilitation Organization, was formed in 1992 by a group of licensed rehabilitators, veterinarians, and other concerned citizens in response to the increasing numbers of wildlife in need of assistance and the lack of people trained and funded to help them. Since these early years, a multitude of wild birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians have come into care every year and have been helped. Each year as the numbers of animals increase, so does the awareness in the community about how they can help.

Wildlife Response, Inc. is a distinctive organization devoted solely to the care of orphaned, injured, and displaced native wildlife and the education of the public – or Wildlife Rehabilitation. Since we are independent of larger private non profits or governmental agencies, we are like the wildlife we successfully release back in the wild – on our own. However, unlike our wild counterparts, we can rely on an active membership to help compensate for the cost of running the organization. Our member program is outlined further if you will click on the Membership button at the top.

If you have found wildlife in distress, orphaned wildlife, have questions about nuisance wildlife, or just have an interest in your wild neighbors, please go to our Wildlife Info page. You will find information here about when and how to intervene, rescue and transportation information.

Since the cost of care of well over a thousand orphaned and injured birds, mammals, and reptiles a year is considerable, we would invite you to our Donation pages to see how you can help if you are not able to volunteer. Adoptions of your favorite wild neighbors, our Wish List, and other ways you can donate are found on these pages. Your donations will help provide basic necessities for the wildlife in our care: food, shelter, and mental stimulation so that they can be released as viable individuals in their natural environment as well as to help manage the administrative aspects of the organization.

Education is the foundation for creating a world that cares about our wild neighbors; please visit our Education page to find information about wildlife, and to schedule a program. WRI provides speakers to address civic groups, businesses, schools and other organizations interested in native wildlife. A focus on wildlife rehabilitation and how we can best share the environment in which we live with these wild creatures that enrich our lives. In the future, non-releasable wild animals may accompany the speaker as part of the presentation.

Please check out our News section for our quarterly newsletter, rescue and rehabilitation stories, and articles about the experiences of our members.
